Escherichia coli, Streptococcus faecalis and other organisms. 1) Respiratory tract infections: Pneumonia and other lower tract respiratory tract infections due to susceptible strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilia influenzae, Klebsiella pneumoniae and other organisms. 3) Sexually transmitted diseases: Infections due to Chlamydia trachomatis including uncomplicated urethral, endocervical or rectal infections. 2) Urinary tract infections: Infections caused by susceptible strains of Klebsiella species, Enterobacter species. If symptoms suggestive of an autoimmune syndrome develop (e.g., fever, rash, arthralgia, malaise), immediately discontinue use of tetracyclines and perform appropriate tests (liver function tests, ANA, CBC) to evaluate the patient. Excipients in commercially available drug preparations may have clinically important effects in some individuals; consult specific product labeling for details. Doxycycline belongs to the class of medications known as tetracyclines. It is an antibiotic that is used to treat certain infections that are caused by bacteria. It is most commonly used to treat lung infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis, urinary tract infections such as cystitis, throat infections such as tonsillitis, skin infections, and sexually transmitted infections. This medication may be available under multiple brand names and/or in several different forms. Any specific brand name of this medication may not be available in all of the forms or approved for all of the conditions discussed here. As well, some forms of this medication may not be used for all of the conditions discussed here. Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than those listed in these drug information articles. To reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria and maintain effectiveness of Vibramycin and other antibacterial drugs, Vibramycin should be used only to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. When culture and susceptibility information are available, they should be considered in selecting or modifying antibacterial therapy. In the absence of such data, local epidemiology and susceptibility patterns may contribute to the empiric selection of therapy. Because many strains of the following groups of microorganisms have been shown to be resistant to doxycycline, culture and susceptibility testing are recommended. Doxycycline is indicated for treatment of infections caused by the following gram-negative bacteria, when bacteriologic testing indicates appropriate susceptibility to the drug: The usual dose of oral doxycycline is 200 mg on the first day of treatment (administered 100 mg every 12 hours) followed by a maintenance dose of 100 mg/day. In the management of more severe infections (particularly chronic infections of the urinary tract), 100 mg every 12 hours is recommended. For all pediatric patients weighing less than 45 kg with severe or life-threatening infections (e.g., anthrax, Rocky Mountain spotted fever), the recommended dosage is 2.2 mg/kg of body weight administered every 12 hours.
